Pixma MX490 Keeps Cycling

Canon Pixma MX490 powers on and goes through initialization, then powers back off.  Keeps repeating the process as long as it's plugged in.  Buttons are non-responsive.

Greetings from Germany! I own a MX495 with same problem: endless boot-loop. Since Canon's support site in Germany is down (sic!) https://www.canon.de/support/consumer_products/contact_support/ I thought I share my findings here. To make it short: Canon could probably fix this in no-time...

My printer connects to the Internet through a web proxy (squid) in my LAN. After I denied access to the proxy, the printer booted up as expected.

Logs from my proxy are pretty interesting. Obviously the printer (IP 192.168.10.28 on my LAN) tries to download a binary file right after it has received an IP address via DHCP from the router:

1654281766.944 2059 192.168.10.28 TCP_TUNNEL/200 6711 CONNECT www.google.com:443  - HIER_DIRECT/142.250.75.228 -
1654281767.484 521 192.168.10.28 TCP_TUNNEL/200 6852 CONNECT accounts.google.com:443 - HIER_DIRECT/142.250.186.77 -
1654281795.777 30899 192.168.10.28 TCP_TUNNEL_ABORTED/200 3816 CONNECT pdisp01.c-wss.com:443 - HIER_DIRECT/13.115.244.223 -
1654281797.564 180 192.168.10.28 TCP_MISS/206 594 GET http : // dtv-p.c-ij. com/sdata/struct01/version.bin  - HIER_DIRECT/54.230.111.103 application/octet-stream
1654281799.339 183 192.168.10.28 TCP_MISS/206 66140 GET http : // dtv-p.c-ij .com/sdata/struct01/sdata.bin  - HIER_DIRECT/54.230.111.103 application/octet-stream

Interestingly the printer connects to accounts.google.com first, then pdisp01-c-wss.com (an AWS cloud server) and then downloads two binary files from dtv-p.c-ij.com, which let him choke leading to a reboot.

If Canon would just remove the binary file (firmware update?) from their server or stops the redirect service all printers would probably boot up just fine.

Thanks, that is the problem. How on earth could Canon do such a big big mistake?

I was experiencing the same problem. The problem exist when the printer tries to connect to their servers. The easy way is to turn off your wifi and use printer cable to connect your laptop to printer and if you don't have printer cable or else if its not working then keep your wifi router on but disconnect the internet cable from your modem which will keep your laptop and printer connected to your wifi without internet and you will be able to use your printer with your laptop through this.

I got my 492 to work again by doing the following:

1. Unplug the printer and turn off the router.

2. Turn on the printer and reset it to factory defaults. (search 'reset mx492' for how to do this)

3. Turn on the router and update the firmware.

You may have to turn off or unplug the printer if it gets hung up cycling during some of this.

It seems to work now. Hope it works for you as well.

Arthur I think your reply is off base here. I can't even log on to my Canon Account. The link is broke, and Canon on the phone would not even connect me to a person without me opening a ticket online which I can't do because of the broken link. After I finally did talk to someone about the web page, she was completely dismissive and said try another browser (like I didn't try that already). Very disappointed in how Canon is handling this, and once I got on a cue in the phone line, the wait was going to be over an hour and I am work. I can't even sign up to make a new account under a different email. This is a problem Canon created and I think they should fix it with another update or reverse whatever they did.

I thought my MX492 was acting up because of a power outage during a storm, too. Apparently that's just a coincidence.

Thank you italolima!!!

@ArthurJ, If you review the posts, you will see that other users found a work around that doesn't involve sitting on hold with Canon only to be told their printer is out of warranty and they can get a credit toward the purchase of a new unit!! Shame on Canon for not posting the work around front and center on this forum page so anyone logging on will see the solution immediately without scrolling thru hundreds of posts!

oh, Yeah!  Finally works -- 4th time was the charm.
