Pixma MX490 Keeps Cycling

Canon Pixma MX490 powers on and goes through initialization, then powers back off.  Keeps repeating the process as long as it's plugged in.  Buttons are non-responsive.

If that is the resolution that Canon is offering, I can assure them that Canon brand will not be a choice for many of us!

My printer is a Canon Maxify MB2010. This problem that you are experiencing is because of DNS. I solved my problem by turning off the Access Point (or unplugging the internet cable from the router's WAN port). The printer will turn on normally. Then go to Setup menu > Web service setup > DNS server setup > Manual setup. Configure an IP from your internal network that is not in use or another IP that is not a DNS server, as the printer will not be able to make queries. Once configured, press OK. Select the 'No' option and press OK. Wait a few moments to complete the configuration. After returning to the menu, press the 'Home' button on the printer. Turn the Access Point back on or reconnect the Internet cable and retest. For me this solution worked. As I do not use external services (Google Cloud), there is no need for my printer to consult on the Internet. Hope this helps.

Same issue here. Came back from Memorial Day weekend and all it does is cycle repeatedly. Worked fine before.

This worked for me. We'll see if it sticks.

I followed these directions and incremented my IP address by 1 number and it took it. I am now able to print and it stopped rebooting.

This is the 2nd office printer in a row where we get 3-4 years of use out of it and then the manufacturer sends out an update and it stops working. We're told to go buy a new printer. Basically, here's double birds.

Thanks italolima for posting your workaround.

I am also having this problem, really sucks that we're only getting canned responses from Canon

I got through this afternoon and was told it is like a car.  They break down.  All they could offer was a 10% discount on a new printer.  Plus, I now have to pay a recycling fee.

I continue to reply to you Arthur.  I followed your advice, created an account, called, and all I was told was that I could be offered a discount on a new printer.  Surely all of us have not experienced a hardware breakdown at the exact same time.

I registered just to say my MX492 is cycling on & off like all the others in the last few hours.  Move fast Canon or it's a crazy way to get us to buy a competitor printer.

Same thing happening with my MX492! Started today out of the blue, it won't stop power cycling, and the screen just has the Canon logo, can't access settings or anything. Tried updating drivers, unplugging for a few minutes, etc.

Sounds like Canon either purposely bricked these models today or forced an update that had the same effect. Hoping they fix this problem FAST or this will be the last Canon product I ever purchase, that's for sure!
