scanned photo too dark

LIDE 220.  Using Scan Utility with photo setting.  My black and white photos are very very dark  300dpi.  I am at a loss as to what to change.  Of course it was OK 3 months ago so I do believe it is user error.  Any suggestions. Thanks.
