I recently needed to replace my 3 year old ImageClass MF445dw all-in-one due to artifacts apparently caused by contamination on the scanning window that I could not fix. I placed my order directly with Canon by phone. I explained the situation and stated that I wanted a machine with the exact capabilities of the 445, except that faxing was not required. The representative recommended the ImageCLASS MF284dw. I placed the order and received the machine shortly thereafter. After about a week of use, I began to suspect that the MF284dw lacked two-sided scanning, which was a feature of importance to me on my old machine. I had not had an actual need to use the feature yet, but even though I removed the 445 software, somehow the old scan utility stuck around, and it showed double-sided capability, adding to my confusion. And while this was important, I did not find time to call Canon and address the issue until about 24 days following the purchase date. I was told that Canon's return/exchange policy was firm at 14 days. However, I was offered the ability to return the machine provided I paid the shipping. I knew from experience that the offer was likely not economically viable, and confirmed on the UPS website that return freight would cost $195, almost the full price of the machine. I asked if there was any way I could be extended the Canon corporate shipping rate, but that was declined. In my opinion, the return offer was disingenuous. Canon had to know that my freight cost would make it unacceptable. I remain displeased that I chose to rely on the advice of a Canon sales associate to my peril. Canon has heretofore been an exellent company to deal with, and their products and post-purchase support made them my first choice. My confidence in them is sadly no longer intact. As it turns out, there is another machine, the MF328dw, that has the features I needed.
