Suspicions about Third Party Help

JCMD1960

So I was not thinking clearly. Thought I went to a Canon help site for reconnecting my printer after changing wireless suppliers. The website looked officially. A Char box opened asking for my name and phone number. Got phone call. The number traced back to NERZWEB.  They connected remotely and started  working on the printer.  I got nervous and disconnected the computer from internet.

Anyone else have experience with this? Anyone heard of NERDZWEB as third party vendor to Canon?

any help would be appreciated.

Greetings,

Nerdzweb - No idea about this entity, but it's not in any way affiliated with Canon.  If they installed on anything on your system, or you allowed them remote access,  your system could be compromised.  Sorry this happened to you.

I would thoroughly check my system for any unknown applications or processes.  If you're not comfortable doing this, enlist the help of somebody who is.  If this system is used for accessing Your financial institution or conducting any type of business it could be at risk.  You'll have to make that determination.  Unfortunately the internet is full of bad actors.  Identity theft is real.  It can happen when you least expect it.  My advice is don't gamble, make sure your system is secure.

Shadowsports offers you some good advice.

Since your were looking for support, did you reconnect your printer to your wireless network?

Thanks Rick,

not sure what I was thinking.

looking for some local and reputatable.

appreciate your comment.

don

After I disconnected.

Did research.  Found something similar to your findings.

However nothing to give me confidence to continue with them.

Hi, JCMD1960!  Canon service is often imitated but never duplicated, and that's evidenced by the number of organizations out there who might try to convince you that they're legit.  If you ever need help with your Canon gear, we always recommend going right to the source first.

The smartest move is to register your gear with us and then you'll get access to all of your official support options including our 800 number.

Hope this information helps!

Asking for name and phone number waves a giant red flag.
