Warning: Do Not Rely on Rakuten Cashback When Purchasing Canon Gear

Just a quick warning to fellow Canon buyers — be very careful relying on Rakuten cashback offers.

On May 6, 2025, I purchased a Canon R5 II and two lenses through Canon USA, motivated by a 15% cashback promotion on Rakuten. The purchase was legitimate and done specifically because of that deal.

Soon after, Rakuten locked my account and later claimed it was terminated due to “ineligible orders,” with no clear explanation. They are now refusing to honor the $1,200+ cashback I earned.

It feels like a complete bait-and-switch. I’ve filed a BBB complaint, but wanted to warn others — don’t make large Canon purchases based on third-party cashback promises. You might end up stuck like I did.

Hello,
Your experience with Rakuten’s cashback offer sounds frustrating, and unfortunately, it seems like others have faced similar issues. A discussion on the Canon Community highlights a warning from another buyer who also had their Rakuten account locked after purchasing Canon gear under a cashback promotion. Rakuten later claimed the orders were “ineligible” without providing a clear explanation.

Additionally, another thread on the Canon Community suggests that Canon USA does not have an official affiliation with Rakuten, which might explain why cashback disputes arise. Some users have reported that Rakuten delays or denies cashback payments, often citing vague reasons.

If you haven’t already, filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) was a good step. Some users on Reddit have also suggested escalating the issue through social media, particularly Twitter, as companies tend to respond more quickly when complaints are made public.

It’s definitely a cautionary tale for anyone considering large purchases based on third-party cashback offers. If you need help drafting a formal complaint or escalation message, I can assist!

Best Regards,
James Batson
