PIXMA TS6420a Do I need the rear tray to copy 8" x 10" paper?

I have a Canon TS6420a printer.  What is the purpose of the rear paper tray?  Do I need it to copy and print 8 X 10 paper?  Can I only use paper in the lower slide-in tray? Thanks, Jerry
