EOS Utility & DPP universal installer quit unexpectedly error on Mac OS Ventura 13.x

Trying to download the EOS Utility for a new camera (90D) and aoso update Digital Photo Professional for an iMac. I can download the DMG file but when I attempt to open it I get this error message "universal installer quit unexpectedly." Using Terminal to mount it didn't help. Using 3rd party DMG opening apps also didn't work.

In my case, my computer is running Maverick.

What worked for me was to create a new user in the user and groups section of system settings.  Give the new user admin rights and reboot.  Log in as the new user (if you don't get the choice once you computer is fully booted, log out and log back in as the new user under the apple, top left corner of the finder).  Once there, log into Canon's website and grab which ever package you need (for me it was EOS Utility and Digital Photo Professional for use with my EOS 5D MarkIV).  Once downloaded, run the DMG installer and voila, no UniversalInstall quit unexpectedly" message.  Just remember if you have Sequoia, you will have to choose the next one down "Sonoma I think, just for the software to be shown.  At the end of the day, it looks like an Apple problem, but who knows.

Next, log out from your new user, go to your applications folder and there you will see your newly created Canon Utilities.  It's best to remove (or backup) your old Canon Utilities folder if you are a bit squeamish about losing them). Double click on the desired app and bam, works like a charm,

Going through this rigamarole (creating a new Mac user account etc.) did the trick for me. Thank you for spelling out the steps!

A couple curiosities about using this EOS Utility app:

  • The Canon Utilities > EOS Utility folder contains two apps. There's an EOS Utility app as well as a subfolder called EU3, which contains an EOS Utility 3 app. What's the difference? They don't say but the first one is dated 6/19/23, while the "3" version is dated 3/25/24.
  • When I ran the first EOS Utility app, I was prompted to download an update (3.18.41) despite having just downloaded the installer for the app (3.18.5) from the Canon website. You'd think they'd provide only the latest app installer rather than having you download an update to an app you just downloaded.
  • When I ran the EOS Utility 3 app in that subfolder instead, it launched fine and connected to my camera. (Its UI is slightly improved too.)

Not sure to be honest.  Glad to hear it worked though!

If you connect a camera and power it on the plain EU link app starts. You really just want to directly start EU3.

The support page download section never seems to delete software, so it is possible (and sometimes desirable) to download an older version of a program.

I just got a new MacBook Pro and started to configure it to be a photo workstation by downloading the Canon utilities. Frustrated when I couldn’t get them to install. Thank goodness I found your workaround! I searched and searched for answers. My original user has admin privileges so you would think that would have been enough, but nooooo! New user with admin privileges worked like a charm! Thank you!

Mac OS Sequoia 15.6 can't install any Canon software using this installer. It comes down to dirty coding, while debugging and looking through the log report the issue is plain and simple. Canon developers have two instances trying to do the same function at the same time, they have both instances located in two different paths.

This will cause spurious casting failures and mysterious crashes. One of the duplicates must be removed or renamed.
