Scanning documents to PDF, the final scan is the entire platen not just the document. how can i fix?

Most of the time, when I scan a document with the Canon MG7520 (especially in auto mode), it scans the whole platen, not just the document. Is there a trick to getting that to work more often? (I'm using a Mac with the Yosemite operating system.)

is there a way to increase the DPI to over 600 on the MG7520?

I know I can increase the DPI past 600 with the Image Capture program (I'm using a Mac with Yosemite), but I'm not sure how I can do it on the Canon software.

PIXMA922 issue with no paper message

Printer keeps giving a "no paper" message about upper tray when lower tray is full and is from where I need to print. Is there a way to override the message? Will it always be doing this or can I select the paper tray at when selecting "print"?
