Will my printer print when the black ink cartridge is empty?

Canon Printer PIXMA MG2520. How do I know when the black cartridge is completely out of ink?

my canon pixma mg2900 will not power up

I tested the wall plugg in for power it is good . made certin evarything was sacurly plugged in then left it unplugged for 24 hrs still nothing.
