To keep heads from clogging and minimize ink usage, is it best to leave modern inkjets (MC532) on or off from day to day when only used occasionally?

PIXMA Mp800 - No longer printing black

We have had this printer for a few years and it has always worked well but recently it has stopped printing black.  I have done all of the cleanings, changed the toner, changed the type of toner but still no luck.  Any ideas?

my canon mg2100 prints the text twice, with the second set of words acting as a shadow
