Pixma MX490 Keeps Cycling

Canon Pixma MX490 powers on and goes through initialization, then powers back off.  Keeps repeating the process as long as it's plugged in.  Buttons are non-responsive.

Tried different fixes with my MX492, but nothing is working. I'm not reassured that Canon is committed to fixing the problem. They may have built in an expiry date in their devices.  After all, cell phone and tablet makers tend to stop supporting their older device models after they deem them too old.  It is not right, but sadly, that's what they do to make money.

That better not be the case... Did you try to turn off the printer AND the wifi? While the Wifi is off turn the printer back on and it will boot up. Then go into settings and disable the wifi. You will only be able to print via a USB, but at least you can print. I hope Cannon fixes this... Article is here if you want to read it.

I had the same problem that all of you had. It was cycling off and on and I could only get it to shut off with unplugging it. I called the Canon telephone support line: +1 (800) 652-2666, and sat on the phone with Hans, who got the printer to act appropriately and then asked me to update my Mac and then call back. I did and then spoke to Bill … we went through many of the things Hans tried and finally what worked was going into printers and scanners under system preferences and then choosing the IP icon … we switched something to AirPrint & that is what made it all work. They were both very patient with me and got my printer working! If you cannot get it on your own, I highly recommend scheduling a block of time to sit on the phone patiently with these folks and they will certainly do everything in their power to fix the problem. At least that is what they did with me today! Great job Bill and Hans!!! Thank you!!!!!

Greetings from Germany! I own a MX495 with same problem: endless boot-loop. Since Canon's support site in Germany is down (sic!) https://www.canon.de/support/consumer_products/contact_support/ I thought I share my findings here. To make it short: Canon could probably fix this in no-time...

My printer connects to the Internet through a web proxy (squid) in my LAN. After I denied access to the proxy, the printer booted up as expected.

Logs from my proxy are pretty interesting. Obviously the printer (IP 192.168.10.28 on my LAN) tries to download a binary file right after it has received an IP address via DHCP from the router:

1654281766.944 2059 192.168.10.28 TCP_TUNNEL/200 6711 CONNECT www.google.com:443  - HIER_DIRECT/142.250.75.228 -
1654281767.484 521 192.168.10.28 TCP_TUNNEL/200 6852 CONNECT accounts.google.com:443 - HIER_DIRECT/142.250.186.77 -
1654281795.777 30899 192.168.10.28 TCP_TUNNEL_ABORTED/200 3816 CONNECT pdisp01.c-wss.com:443 - HIER_DIRECT/13.115.244.223 -
1654281797.564 180 192.168.10.28 TCP_MISS/206 594 GET http : // dtv-p.c-ij. com/sdata/struct01/version.bin  - HIER_DIRECT/54.230.111.103 application/octet-stream
1654281799.339 183 192.168.10.28 TCP_MISS/206 66140 GET http : // dtv-p.c-ij .com/sdata/struct01/sdata.bin  - HIER_DIRECT/54.230.111.103 application/octet-stream

Interestingly the printer connects to accounts.google.com first, then pdisp01-c-wss.com (an AWS cloud server) and then downloads two binary files from dtv-p.c-ij.com, which let him choke leading to a reboot.

If Canon would just remove the binary file (firmware update?) from their server or stops the redirect service all printers would probably boot up just fine.

I thought my MX492 was acting up because of a power outage during a storm, too. Apparently that's just a coincidence.

Exactly the same for me.  I cannot get into the menu.  Does anyone know how to do a factory reset without the menu?

Having the same issue. I just used my printer last night without any problems. Turned it on this morning & it keeps cycling on & off. Help! I need my printer for my small business!

Same issue here. The printer hadn't been used for a few days but started endlessly power cycling when trying to use it today. Have had no luck getting anything to display other than the cannon logo or an error code from pulling the ink cartridges.

whe the Wi-fi is off the it goes through but not sure if it will print tho

Experiencing the same issue here. Printer was successfully working yesterday afternoon; today is stuck in endless power cycle.
