Through ton's of trial and error I have concluded that this external mic port will NOT work with a external microphone unless that external device is powered. I ended up purchasing a Comica CVM-WM100 which works pretty good other than it "Shows" a lot of noise when recording, but on playback it sounds fine.

When you used that mic with your Android phone (I have a Galaxy S7) did you have the power on or off? Supposedly you aren't supposed to need the power. I use it with my Vixia camera and it works great, but I knew going in that it needed a powered mic.

I'm having mostly the same issue ... however, I'm not trying to plug a microphone into the camera, but rather a stereo audio cord that routes to the output of an Allen and Heath ZED14 mixer to which I have a USB audio return for playing audio clips and music, as well as two microphones for a podcast. When I plug the cord in, I either hear hissing, though nothing is feeding through the mixer, or I get some sort of hum. I've adjusted all of the settings on my mixer, but still getting the background noise. What could the issue be? Am I not able to use this camcorder for recording my podcast?

Agreed.
Why not tell us what microphones work with the camera? The lavalier is not what I need because I need a microphone that has its own stand. I know it needs external power. Do usb powered microphones work or not? Someone in this thread seemed to indicated that they would not work.

I too am having issues with the microphon port. The entire reason I purchesed the Canon Vixia R800 camcorder was to film at different locations using a handheld microphone. There are not any brands you can recomend that are compatable? It seems this was a disapointing purchase if there is no guidance on how to make this prodcut actually useable. I would really appreciate any help with this.

I see the mic jacks.
Is the small one for power from the camcorder or for power to the camcorder to power the mic?
Hoping to use an external Stereo mic on my Canon XL2.
Thanks

I have found that the TRRS plug is for phones and tablets that allow you to use a non-powered mic in the headphone jack. That won't work for this camera. You need the TRS plug - but the mic has to have its own power supply. The Canon documentation is kind of misleading (by omission); There are 1000's more non-powered 3.5mm mic's out there than there are powered mics. As a minimum, you would need something like this: CVM-V30-PRO- powered Microphone-Super-Cardioid Directional mic (Find on Amazon). This was about $59. I didn't take the time to find one cheaper, but you probably can. Just make sure it is TRS or has a TRRS to TRS adapter AND that it is powered.

I have a Bluetooth wireless mic that I used on my HF R700 with no problems. Then I ordered a lapel mic and connected it first to the Bluetooth mic and then to the jack in the camcorder itself. Now NEITHER external mic works. Like most of you, the only reply I got from Canon (on another thread) was basically "Gee whiz, it should work."
Without the external mic, this camcorder isn't useful to me. I will probably have to buy a new one, and it will definitely NOT be a Canon.
