I just purchased my first "new" camera in 21 years. I have a trusty EOS 20D, but I wanted to upgrade to mirrorless, so I bought a used R6. The improvements are quite impressive, but something simple seems to be missing: automatic folder creation for the images.
My 20D made a new folder every 100 images. I just shot my first "job" with the R6 (1,100 photos at a horse show), and all the photos are in one folder on the SD card. Is this normal? How can I set up the camera so a new folder is created every X photos?
When I bought the camera (from a reputable camera shop), it was reset to the factory defaults. I'm not seeing anything in the manual other than a way to manually create more folders. Seems clunkier now compared to then.
OK, now I see it. A new folder will be created after 9999 images! Really? That seems like a lot, so can you please give me your tips and tricks for folder management? Does it actually matter? And just because I create a new folder manually, how does the camera know to put new images into that particular folder? For example, if I create three folders: Dressage, Jumping, and XC, how do I let the camera know to put the images I take in the dressage ring into the dressage folder rather than another folder?
Looking forward to your suggestions!

For quite a number of years Canon EOS cameras have been able to store 9999 pictures in a single folder, before creating a new folder. So now folders are only auto created when you capture image number 9999, at that point the camera creates the next folder eg 101EOSR6 and starts from image number 0001 again.
Your older EOS 20D only stored 100 picture in a folder since the memory cards and file systems used at the time would be too slow to scan through so many file headers in one folder.

Study the Advanced User Guide for the R6, starting at page 706 for firmware version 1.9.0 (I think that is the latest). Check your R6 to make sure it has the latest firmware, mine is 1.9.0 but I've moved on to the R6 II and R5 series and may have missed the latest.
You can create folders for your various events, although you will have to abbreviate or otherwise get creative with folder naming. You can create folders in camera or directly to the card using your PC, provided you follow Canons naming conventions. Once created, you simply change to the folder you want to store your shots in. One quick way to get to the folder selection screen is to add it to "My menu" and from there you can fairly quickly select which folder to store your shots in. Nothing will be automatic so you will have to create and select the folders you want to use.

I learned something today. I save nothing on my cameras. I download, purge the camera, and store as I go and back up files redundantly.
