Dark Stripe Upper Right Corner - 5D Mark IV

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this community. My name is Juan Carlos, I'm an amateur photographer. I have owned several canon DSLR models, and currently I'm using a 5D Mark IV.

This camera had worked pretty well until now. Recently I found this dark stripe on the upper right corner of all my pictures. I tried switching lenses, I own the 50mm 1.2 L, 16-35 4 L and 24-70 2.8 L. The three of them showed the same result, 

What I have noticed is that this stripe gets darker as I decrease aperture. For instance, while using the 50 mm 1.2, when I'm at F1.2 the stripe is barely noticeable, however while moving up to 6.3, 9, or 16, it gets really dark.

I've been trying to look for information about this. Not sure if this is a sensor issue and needs replacement, or if it can be fixed somehow without sending to workshop. I really appreciate your comments. Thank you so much!

Hello, Juan, and welcome to the forum.

It looks like there is something on the sensor, maybe a hair or piece of lint. You may be able to use a rocket blower to remove it: Remove the lens; turn the camera face down and give it a few puffs of air with a quality rocket blower. If that doesn't work, you may have to use a sensor brush or dry sensor swab. If you are squeamish about touching the sensor assembly, you will have to find a reputable shop or send it to Canon for C & C.

Hello again! Thank you so much! It was actually hair. I can't even imagine how it got inside, as the shutter should prevent from going in. I set to manual sensor clean and removed it with plastic pliers. Pictures are back to normal. Thanks again!

It's pretty easy for stuff like that to get in your sensor box while you are changing lenses. The shutter on the R5 mark IV doesn't close when the camera is off, what you are seeing is the mirror and that is what flips up when you go to "manual cleaning" 🙂 One thing you can do to reduce the chances of debris getting in is to hold the camera face down when the lens is off. Some folks recommend putting the body cap on during lens changes, but I find this a bit extreme and often impractical, at least when I'm shooting outdoors. I use my camera bag as a table to free up my hands for lens prep.

BTW, I have the 5D mark IV and several MILC's, but I still use the 5DIV on occasion... Great camera!
