Does the Canon mg5420 have a removable printhead?

Do any of the newer generation printers have a rear paper tray?

Hi icingimages,

Most of our inkjet models have removable print heads.  The consumable ink tank models have print heads built into the tank, whereas our printers with individual ink tanks have a permanent but removeable print head.

Many of our older inkjet printers had rear print trays, but not all of them have a front cassette.

The Canon MG5420, does not have a rear feed, only a cassette same as the ip7220.  I have spoken to Canon directly and also purchased a machine and downloaded the manual.  If you are sure this has a rear feed, can you tell me how to access it?  Also the printhead looks like if you remove the 2 screws you can remove the printhead is this the only way to remove it?

Karl, I am surprised of your lack of knowledge on your product.  The 5420 does not have a removable printhead.  If I am missing something, please let me know, but I cant get it out of there and there is no rear tray.  Rear tray means tray in the back of the printer. There is only a tray underneath the scan bed.  Please advise if I am missing something, but I cant for the life of me figure it out and I have only used Canon products for the last 15 years.  I am resolving myself to the fact that I have to look at other brands now unless these two features are available and I cant figure it out.

Hi icingimages,

Let me clear up a few things about the PIXMA MG5420.

The printhead is removable, but...

Because the printhead itself is very delicate and critical to the function of the unit, , the removal process is designed to prevent unintentional removal of the printhead when changing ink or performing other maintenance on the printer.  Cleaning the printhead or changing ink does not require the removal of the printhead.  Additionally, the printhead is installed at the factory to limit the customer's need to manipulate this delicate part.  Unless the printer is being serviced, there is no need to remove the printhead.

About the paper trays:  If you review the specification page for the printer, you will find that the printer uses two front cassette trays.  A "Lower Cassette" with a 125 Sheets Plain Paper capacity and an "Upper Cassette" with a 20 Sheets Photo Paper (4" x 6") capacity.

Yes, this does have a removeable print head. First, open the cover. Once the print head gets into the cartridge change position, unplug the printer so it stays there. Remove all the cartridges. Then, you must pull open this inner cover that is like a mini paper holder - it is not, but it is similar to the main paper support tray but much smaller and inside on the front top. After that, the basket surrounding the front of the ink cartridges slides out about 1/2" (13mm). It is held in place by two spring clips (you do not have to pull up on them, just gently pull that basket the same direction the paper feeds out). Then, you can reach inside and get out the print heads. First, rotate the top out, then the whole thing will move. You can clean it according to the directions

Be sure to pay attention to removing the rubber rings, and don't forget to put them back on when you re-install.

Though I am not at all technical, I was able to remove and clean the printer head for the MG5420.  These two videos were very helpful.  The first one deals with the actual removal of the printer head, the second one with cleaning.
