Even after unplugging, even after pretending to clear the jam from all orifices, opening and closing the rear several times, I still get Error Code 1303. I happen to know there is no jam, since the last time I printed I put in one sheet of paper and got out one sheet of paper. There is no possible jam. How can I clear the stupid error code so I can print again?

Greetings...
No JAM... but printer obviously thinks there is one.
All you can do it follow these steps:
https://ugp01.c-ij.com/ij/webmanual/ErrorCode/MX490%20series/EN/ERR/1303.html
If that doesn't resolve, the printer will require service or replacement.
