Canon Pixma MX490 powers on and goes through initialization, then powers back off. Keeps repeating the process as long as it's plugged in. Buttons are non-responsive.

Agreed graumli and thx for your help...one of many.
I've been posting and posting but some don't seem to get it or...I dunno. Getting frustrated that I've given the fix and it seems to be ignored. Same people complaining even after being told the fix.

Agreed. I'm surprised at the number of people that have posted on these threads saying they also have the problem, why hasn't Canon fixed it, I'm going to buy a new printer, what about this (enter conspiracy theory here), etc. etc. And then it appears they haven't even bothered to read the dozens of posts on here that explain the workaround.

Canon is now offering a firmware update to fix this (see below) but if you want a fairly easy quick fix (and these will be my last posts on this, I have a headache!):
Solution but only if you don't require any online/web services from your printer (cloud?): To begin, I used my IP address, changed a bit for this fix. Get it at computer control panel--view network status--connections (hyperlinked, gives wifi status when clicked)--details button--write down IPv4 address. Unplug printer while it's off. Unplug router. Plug printer back in and it will start. On mine & I think most, press "tools" button, gives you setup menu. Use arrows to move thru selections and OK to make selection. Arrow thru to web service setup, OK. Arrow to DNS server setup, OK. Arrow to manual setup, OK. I had all zeroes here, used my IP address to fill in but changed last 3 to 006, but I think any number will work, OK. (My wireless requires key/password and I hope yours does too, but it's wrong anyway so...) Then select NO option. Printer will do its thing. When menu comes back, I think press the tools button again to exit. Then plug router back in. It will take awhile for it to reboot and your wireless service to return. When it does, you can wireless print/work again. On and off creates no issues. In effect, this disables your printer's capability of connecting to the web, but does NOTHING to your local wireless.

Looks like the fix has been posted. Found this on the thread for the MG7520:

And now this forum is nailing me for posting...to help.
Ok enough I'm done here and thank everyone who helped me and others who actually pay attention.

Not going to bother. Mine's "fixed" good enough for me. Hopefully anything new will work Canon...you idiots. Wonder what happened but I've been thru so much in last 4 days I don't care I think. My head hurts...and shoulder, arms, neck, etc. Maybe even tongue...from swearing?

When you disable the wifi, the printer isn't going to use the network. Once wifi is disabled your printer stays on. Then you can go in the menu to assign a different IP/DSN ID number. Once you complete that process and connect it to the wifi, it's "registered" to your wifi router under the number you assigned. Why this works I'm not sure all I know is I used this method to get around the chronic shutting off of the printer and it worked.

Sorry graumli, I got it a long time ago. You were instrumental in helping ME. But I asked ?s you answered and it worked and has been working. Turn off, turn on, manually, no issues. And printing wireless all day. Why would I go thru the BS Canon wants me to do now when this older printer is now working fine with your (and others) DNS change/fix. Hopefully, Canon will "fix" new printers or they will work, whatever. I'm happy for now...and STILL have instructions for this fix. Don't care about printer access to web...would hope it wouldn't actually. Want cheap, easy, printer for home use...that's all. And one that won't reject me if my ink runs low or out. This thing will print blank pages endlessly without a care. It just tells me ink is low and I ignore it UNTIL it runs out. 😉
I got it! And thx again. But still disgusted with whatever happened to cause all this and failure of my preferred Canon Pixma printer...have had 4. And where was Canon for some 5 days?

I had the same problem that all of you had. It was cycling off and on and I could only get it to shut off with unplugging it. I called the Canon telephone support line: +1 (800) 652-2666, and sat on the phone with Hans, who got the printer to act appropriately and then asked me to update my Mac and then call back. I did and then spoke to Bill … we went through many of the things Hans tried and finally what worked was going into printers and scanners under system preferences and then choosing the IP icon … we switch something to AirPrint & that is what made it all work … I had to wait on hold for along time, as they seemed busy. But they were both very patient with me and got my printer working! If you cannot get it on your own, I highly recommend scheduling a block of time to sit on the phone patiently with these folks and they will certainly do everything in their power to fix the problem. At least that is what they did with me today! Great job Bill and Hans!!! Thank you!!!!!
