Canon Pixma MX490 powers on and goes through initialization, then powers back off. Keeps repeating the process as long as it's plugged in. Buttons are non-responsive.

This workaround came from others on here saying to keep the printer from connecting to the internet. This is just how I achieved success.
I use dd-wrt on my router so I added an access restriction for the printers MAC address from the internet. For those with a basic router you should be able to do something similar nin parental controls. The MAC address for my MX490 isn't on the printer anywhere so I found it in my DHCP client list. If you are having trouble finding yours, it may start with 84:BA:3B.
Good luck.

Great idea. I tried to do the same thing but the stupid Google Fiber router does not have that feature.

everyone is having this problem, are you using Canon ink or a cheaper brand? I'm using a cheaper brand and I'm wondering if they are bricking my printer because of it.

If anyone is on Twitter, @canoncanada (finally) responded to another customer that they are aware and working on it. They also shared the workaround.

That's funny, I changed the IP address of my printer to a made up one and it prints from both my laptop (wifi) and desktop. If you need a valid IP for another reason, see below:
This problem that you are experiencing is because of DNS. I solved my problem by turning off the Access Point (or unplugging the internet cable from the router's WAN port). The printer will turn on normally. Then go to Setup menu > Web service setup > DNS server setup > Manual setup. Configure an IP from your internal network that is not in use or another IP that is not a DNS server, as the printer will not be able to make queries. Once configured, press OK. Select the 'No' option and press OK. Wait a few moments to complete the configuration.
