This is a "call to arms" for all of you Canon customers who have had this problem and have had their printers disabled because of it. Please respond with the model of your printer and if you were able to fix it, what you did to fix it.
We need to put pressure on Canon to respond this product defect. It appears to be bad firmware that does not allow the user to override the problem and to continue to use the printer even in a degraded mode. From my investigations the problem is NOT a printhead issue - no way one can be printing fine and then have this error alert without having changed the printhead or ink cartridges!
Canon, PLEASE take this issue seriously and provide a solution across the affected models. If nothing else there should be a trade-in allowance for those printers that have been affected by this product defect.
I have had many Canon printers because they have superior functional specifications. I want to be able to continue using Canon products but only if I can have confidence that this product defect will not destroy my investment.
If Canon is unresponsive our next step should be to aggressively publisize this product defect on social media and on major product vendor outlet sites as negatives reviews.
Forum Users, please reply with your affected model number(s) and with details of any succdessful fix procedure.

I had an idea!
What if everyone (worldwide) with a dud Canon printer took them to their nearest Canon retailer and left them on the counter?
Someone, somewhere might notice. Maybe even the mainstream media.
Just a thought...............

That is a truly brilliant idea.
Sadly most people will probably have binned them.
Mine has gone to my daughter for "spares" should she need them (she has the same model, which luckily for her has not - yet- had the error message .......)

Mine's gone as well. I was so angry at Canon's attitude I smashed it up with a sledgehammer and posted a photo on the internet. Canon deleted it of course.

There are almost 1000 posts in this thread representing a lot of people with this U052 issue and Canon still hasn't made any effort to fix our issue that won't cost us more money. They add insult to injury when you call support and all they say is repair it at a higher cost than replacing the printer or junk it. I will never buy another Canon product!

Hey, I don't know what everyone is complaining about... I contacted Canon and they offered to sell me a discounted printer that was more expensive than I could buy it at Amazon. The printer was an MG5220 which could use some inexpensive ink and they offered a printer at full price which required the expensive Canon ink... now aren't they generous. Let me know if anyone raises the class action issue... I'm interested. I just bought a Brother printer and I'm taking the Canon to the dump.

From Australia, have had multiple Canon products in my lifetime which have served me well, but now, like the thousands before me, have just fallen foul of the dreaded U052 error with my MP610 printer ! WAS a great multifunctional printer only occasionally used for scanning and producing quality photos. Working one day, failed on start-up the next ! Tried the web based solutions to fix to no avail. Absolutely disgusting is Canon's corporate non-direction in fixing or coming to the party in resolving this issue. Don't you realise that keeping your head in the sand will result in the loss of many once loyal customers like myself who now will buy other brands. Hope you get slammed in future sales and the current Class action ......

Oh, well done Canon - I see you removed my complaint detailing why my own printer broke down. Clearly you DO scan these messages and remove any that are not to your liking.
Thankyou for now making me a lifelong enemy of your brand - forget the democracy of complaining on these boards. Just dump your elitist arrogance all over the little man.
37,000 complaints in one of the class action lawsuits alone - I wonder how many people of these customers have told others to stay away from your awful brand, and so it goes on.
But, as long as you lot are making a stinking profit to keep you in stupidly priced houses, top brand tagged clothes, posh dinners, and new boobs for the wife and mistress, what would you care?!
