Hi All,
Does anyone know the Canon Connect app GPS update rate? In other words, how often does it update the camera with the location your shooting from? I'm already aware that general GPS receivers update position once/second. I recently did a walking tour in wide open spaces ( so no obstructions), took 14 photos in different locations and the location of all the photographs was exactly the same.
Camera: R5 running firmware version 2.0.0
R5 showed Bluetooth and GPS active
Canon Connect app version 3.2.0.20, build 1391,app shows Status: Sending location info to camera, GPS via mobile: Available, Location information: Can be used
TIA

Thanks for the response.
I did do that.
I am able to see the correct GPS data on the camera (current time and location). In the past, all images are tagged with that exact data, not the current data at the time of the shutter.
However, I did some testing today and I think I may have stumbled on a solution (for me, anyway). While testing today, I decided to quit all other apps on my phone for the test. That turned out to fix the problem. I walked around the block a couple of times and took photos. Some with my phone unlocked and some with my phone locked. I also turned off my camera a few times to simulate a sleep (and disconnect from the phone). I even disabled wifi (thinking that in the bush, there is likely no wifi to assist the location data).
Every photo had current GPS data tagged correctly. 🎉
I checked the permissions for Location Services on my phone and Canon Camera Connect is the only app that has "Always" selected. All other apps are disabled or "While Using the App". So, I think that the Canon app is being blocked from getting location data due to some other apps use of location services. 🤷♂️
I will continue to test various apps and see if I can determine the culprit. I am guessing it is Camera app as it is always open on my phone.

If you power cycled the camera then for me that causes the GPS data to update.
Otherwise for me the same data from the first image is copied to all further images. You don’t even need to go anywhere to test this, you can see if the embedded GPS time changes. Having to power cycle constantly is a bit of a pain if you’re taking a lot of images.

This issue is still a problem for me. Testing at home seems to work, but I am at a loss as to why I cannot get this to work while I am in a park.
I have resorted to using a third-party GPS tracking app and manually tagging the photos in Lightroom.

I haven't had a chance to test yet, but I did download a logging app for my iPhone and Jeffery Friedl has a plugin for LrC that will populate the metadata.

Thanks. That workaround seems to be working for me.
I do not have a plugin for Lightroom but it appears to have the tools built into the app. I suspect that Lightroom is not tagging the originals (which I would prefer) but that is not critical.
I would still like to find a solution for the Camera Connect app as it is tagging the originals and has less steps.

What app are you using?

GraphicConverter from Lemke Software will automatically geotag photos using a gpx file from a Garmin or an app by comparing the time in the .gpx file with the time tag in the photos' metadata. Of course you have to have a Macintosh.

If we are talking Mac, I prefer HoudahGeo.

I am using GPS Tracks by David Morneault on iOS.
I import the track into Lightroom and can apply the photos to the track (with offset, if needed). Works pretty well, but it is more involved than the Camera Connect app workflow.

This works every time I tested it, start camera connect app up then lock iPhone put phone in my pocket, walk to location turn R10 camera on it auto connects via Bluetooth and grabs current GPS location. Take pictures. Turn off camera when done taking pictures then walk to next location turn on camera etc…. This works and saves battery on camera and iPhone since GPS is power hungry. Make sure to have current version of canon camera connect software and current camera firmware.
