imageCLASS MF462dw scans when it feels like it

I purchased the multi-functioned MF462DW (printer/copier/scanner/fax) a few months ago, specifically because I needed a printer/scanner the operated through wifi.  I recall it took some trouble to get it working via WIFI, but mostly it works.  But I have always had a strange (but pretty easily reproducible) problem with scanning. If I start scanning from the printer itself (selecting the computer to scan to, I have 3 computers on the network, but almost always scan to just 1 computer), it works fine.  But if I scan another sheet, it fails with some error. (It doesn't give the error).  If I go back to the menu and select the computer again, there are now 2 entries for the original target computer. Hmm, which one to pick?  It seems no matter which I select, it fails.  But if I wait a minute or two, and pick again, it will work. This is annoying, as what should be a 1-minute operation now takes 5 minutes while I keep trying and failing, and then all of a sudden it works.  This device was replacing a Brother printer/scanner which worked flawlessly for 10+ years.

Hello,

From what you are describing, it looks like a network communication issue. We would be happy to assist, but we would need some additional information to assist further. You can reply to this message with the information below and we can provide some troubleshooting steps or suggestions. For a more immediate resolution I would suggest contacting support over the phone at 1-800-652-2666. Our agents would be happy to check the network environment to see what is going on.

1. What version of the Mac or Windows operating system are you using on your computer?

2.How far is the printer from your router?

Greetings,

If you have multiple instances of a device appearing, (even temporarily) something is going on with your network.  A configuration or setting or multiple devices in your address book (if used)?  Another possibility is DHCP lease times.

Sometimes people change their connection type and switch from one interface to another (wired, wireless or USB).  If you don't remove the other connection first, multiple instances could exist.  I know you said you're using yours wirelessly.  With the limited information provided, we can only speculate.  Whatever's happening. There's probably a plausible explanation.  The printer will query the network and might try to use what worked previously.  If a DHCP lease has expired, and the target system reconnects to your network it might get a different IP address (destination).  This is another possible reason why you see two devices (temporarily).  Once it resolves you get only one entry.

My recommendation would be to assign a static IP for the printer on your network, then reinstall the printer on each device as an IP printer, (Windows or Mac).  If you're not comfortable doing this, I'm sure myself or others here can help.

You also have Canon support as a resource as @Hector recommend.

I own two MFPs and they've been absolutely rock solid.
