LBP6230dw Unresponsive on wired net following power-up

ccaffee1

I have set my printer to auto power-down after 2 hours of non-use. It does so as configured.

The problem occurs when the printer is powered-up. It fails to be available over wired ethernet using Win 10 Pro build 19044.1889. It often requires several power-cycling to become available.

Canon driver version 21.46.

I don't own the LBP6230dw, so just a few general questions. 🙂

Are the latest drivers installed?

Does the unit behave properly over a WiFi connection?

Does it behave properly using an Android or Apple computer/phone when connected by either Ethernet or WiFi?

Thank you for your interest. To your questions:

Latest drivers are in use.

WiFi networking not in use - wired access only

Not using Android/Apple device for printing. - Win 10 PC only.

Greetings,

There are some simple steps you can perform to help diagnose this problem.

When the printer is working, verify its settings.  Log into your router, check attached devices.  Verify the IP address the printer is assigned.  Confirm the device is available and can be reached.  Example, PING it from a command prompt.  (And/or) Open a web browser and enter its IP, does it's webserver display?

After a period of inactivity and sleep, wake the printer.  Again, verify the IP address has not changed.  Print jobs will fail if the IP is now different.

Steps I might use to resolve.  Assign or reserve a static IP for the printer.  This is done on your router.  This will be a persistent IP address that does not change.  Once complete, remove the printer from Control Panel > Device and Printers using right-click (remove).

Now add the printer as a TCP/IP printer.  Add Printer button, > Select My Printer is not listed, then select the radio button add as TCP/IP printer.

Now enter the IP address you assigned or reserved for the device.  Since drivers are already installed, windows will do the rest.  Moving forward your printer will always be reachable at this IP address.  It will remain persistent and won't change.

Doesn't matter if it goes to sleep, you turn it off or don't use it for a year.  The printer will always be assigned the same IP.  This set up only needs to be performed once.

Thank you for your interest. Static IP via reserved MAC address in DHCP server is in use.

The expected behavior would be to become available on net and any pending print jobs started without manual intervention. Testing observes the printer ping-able at the expected address but pending print jobs do not start when printer is offline at the time they were queued in Windows. To workaround, I have had to power-cycle the printer and restart queued print jobs. Sometimes the print job must be cancelled and re-created after the printer can successfully run a test page before it will print. I like the idea of configuring the printer to automatically power-down following a period of idleness. However, the extent of intervention required for restarting is disappointing and may result in having the printer powered at all times.

Hello Ccaffee1,

If you are able to ping the printer but queued jobs re unable to reach the printer, you can try restarting the Windows prints pooler service on the computer to see if the jobs start to print.

  1. You can press the Windows key and the letter R key at the same time on your keyboard. In the run box that appears, you can type in services.msc and click OK.
  2. In the list of services, you can scroll through and highlight the print spooler service.
  3. Click the option to restart at the top of the window.

If the jobs are unable to reach the printer after restarting the spooler service, you can also try turning off any security software that is turning on the computer to see if it resolves the issue. If the issue continues, I would suggest contacting support at 1-800-652-2666. Our agents would be happy to assist.
