I just got serious into photography last summer and I'm ready to upgrade, I'm leaning towards a 90D with the fold out screen and multiple focus points for easier focus stacking, other than that I'm happy with the T7. Does this seem like an appropriate step up?

I would not recommend looking into a DSLR camera. Canon has ended production on DSLR Cameras and lenses. Who knows how long Canon will support DSLRs and EF/ EF-S lenses. Everything has moved onto the EOS R series and RF Mount.

IMHO, multiple focus points can make it *harder* to do focus stacking, since you should use the same point during the whole process.

Doug,
What is your budget for the new body. Knowing that changing over to mirrorless can be expensive have you thought about holding onto your EF lenses, purchasing a Canon adapter and buying an R body? I continue to use EF lenses that perform better on my R bodies than they did on my DSLR's.
Just a thought.

If you are thinking the EOS 90D, then you should also consider a move to mirrorless and the EOS R7 is the most direct equivalent model to the EOS 90D. As others have said you can use any existing EF and EF-S lenses you have on the R-series cameras using the Canon EF to EOS R mount adapter.
In effect the EOS R7 has the same 32MP image sensor as the EOS 90D and then adds a lot more powerful and capable AF system for all sorts of subjects. It also offers focus stacking in the same way that the EOS 90D does.
