I am continuing to just piddle with my camera checking out all of the functions that can be assigned to a button and came to the "Screen off" function. I assigned it to the AF point selection button. It just doesn't work. I did the same thing with the R1 and it works as I would expect. I also tried the DOF button.
I just updated to firmware 1.3.1 but I didn't play with this function before the upgrade so I don't know if this is new or not.

Greetings,
If I'm not mistaken, you can set the screen timeout between 15 seconds and 30 minutes.
Is 15 seconds not fast enough for you?

You can use this reference to see the buttons that are available for screen off assignment.

I suggest you try in a different shooting mode. There may be a conflict.
