The crippled EOS M3!

kydimos

The current firmware on the EOS M3 has been stripped from some of the basic features that a photographer would expect from an EOS camera. Features that you get on a lot of the cheaper models: NO tethering, NO porting, NO liveview, NO remote photography etc.

Why has the firmware been cripples on the EOS M3 and is Canon intending to offer any of the features mentioned anytime soon?

Mirrorless cameras draw more power than DSLRs. It's possible that the omisions are a response to that reality. Otherwise, time between battery charges might be unacceptably low.

But that is why Canon offers the AC Adapter Kit ACK-E17 specifically for the EOS M3.

The EOS M3 turns off the HDMI signal / LDC display after 10 sek to 3 min - even with ECO mode OFF. As stated in the manual: “The [Display Off] setting is applied even if you set [Auto Power Down] to [Off].”

What is the point of the HDMI port, when the camera auto kills the signal? Is there any way to keep the HDMI signal alive, so that the HDMI port can be used for live preview or something else than for single shoot?

The EOS M3 holds a great potential with its high image quality, small form factor and mirrorless design. It is possible to fit a lot of alternative lenses on this specific model due to its mirrorless design. It should easily be possible to use it for astrophotography and piggybacking due to the cameras small form factor. But unfortunately, Canon has crippled the firmware on the EOS M3 wrecking an otherwise nice camera. No tethering, no porting, no live preview, no intervalometer and no remote photography!

How about fixing the firmware?

"How about fixing the firmware?"

Did you buy one before checking its specs?

Did a lot of research before deciding on the EOS M3, but didn’t expect it to be more crippled than a lot of cheaper models. The best tools are versatile, and the current firmware ensures that this camera is the opposite. It is also nice to have a camera that can grow with your creative abilities and increasing need to experiment as a photographer.

Don't hold your breath for a new firmware that does all you ask.  You are better served to just move on.

In addition to the shortcomings already mentions, the FW is somewhat incomplete. E.g. what is the point with the function POWER SAVING – AUTO POWER DOWN? It is possible to toggle the function ON and OFF, but it seems to have no impact on the cameras behavior. The EOS M3 powers down no matter, what you do? Does anyone know how to turn AUTO POWER DOWN – OFF?

You are probably right … moving on …
