Setting Minimum Shutter Speed on Aperture Priority Canon eos R50

Barbarayin

Hello,

I'm a beginner and have had my Canon EOS R50 for a few months. Is there a way to set Minimum Shutter Speed while on Aperture Priority mode?

I was using the 50mm f1.8 lens and noticed in some situations even with the Aperture wide open (and Auto ISO), the shutter speed was dropping to 1/80, which was causing some blur in my pictures (i'm assuming due to hand holding). I wanted to set the minimum shutter speed (increase), but couldn't find where to do it.

I have noticed that almost all Canon camera have a way of doing this, but I haven't found a way to do it on the R50. I understand that this is a entry level camera with more limitations, but this feature seems to be pretty basic and very useful, even in a beginner model camera.

If not available, what's the likelihood that Canon will bring this feature to the R50 in a software/firmware update in the future?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

From what I could find in searching the manual the R50 does not have an option to select a minimum shutter speed. It does seem to have built-in, however, an algorithm to seelct the generally recommended shutter speed.

The general rule is 1/focal length as a minimum shutter speed.

You have a crop sensor camera with a 50mm lens mounted. The equivalent angle of view is 50*1.6 or 80mm lens equivalent. The camera set a SS of 1/80.

In all likelihood this is not something that is likely to be added as a firmware update, though technically it might be straightforward, but I'm not a Canon firmware engineer.

The similar EOS R10 does have the feature you're looking for, but it is positioned as a slightly more advanced model at a different price point. For comparison I looked at the older DSLR models, and this was not included on the more basic models, but was an additional feature on the mid-range and advanced models.

Should you want to set a specified minimum shutter speed with aperture wide open you could use M mode with Auto ISO. You can select a maximum ISO speed for Auto to a value that gives you an acceptable noise level.
