R5 mark II: Live Streaming gives HDMI Settings error

I've tried nine ways to sunday to get this thing to work with the webcam or other utility.   Putting a USB cord  in causes the camera to show a laptop and battery icon, but nothing happens on the computer end (unlike with my RP).

If I go through the menus and try the "Live Streaming" option, it pops up an error saying "Restricted by the following settings:  HDMI settings."   Only HDMI setting I ever touched was to switch from AUTO to 1080p and back.   Tried master resetting the camera.   Still have no idea why this gets wedged there.

Hi flyingron,

The Live Streaming setting on the camera is for setting up a wifi stream. It can't stream through an HDMI connection and wifi at the same time. If you want to view information on setting up a wifi stream that is on pages 809-815 of the manual.

If you want to stream to a computer through an HDMI connection you would not be able to use a direct connection between the camera and computer. You would connect the HDMI cable to a capture card, and then use capture software on your computer to output the feed to your streaming or conferencing service. We do not make capture cards or capture software, so there aren't specific ones we could recommend.

For a USB connection the screen you saw on your camera is what it shows when it detects a USB connection. For USB streaming you would connect the camera directly to your computer and then use our EOS Webcam Utility software to output the video to your streaming or conferencing service. There is one setting on the camera to double check for USB streaming. Go to into the camera menu, go to the networking tab, select Choose USB Connection App, and make sure that is set to Video Calls/Streaming.

I'm not doing squat with HDMI.   I have no idea why the camera mentions it.   

I have tried both the Choose USB in both the Remote Control and the Video Streaming settings and it still gripes about HDMI.

I know the icon on the back means the USB is connected.   I've been using the webcam utility with the RP for many years now.   However, my new R5ii refuses to do any of the features you promised.   I can get the CanonConnect to run for remote shooting, but no live streaming of any kind either via USB or via the wireless (even though the camera does say it connects to the webcam utility).

Yes, and I've read the relevant sections of the manual many times.   Try not to be so condescending to your customers.

And your so-called "troubleshooting and errors" documentation OMITS any description of this HDMI error message.

Hi Ron,

 

It is definitely strange that you are being restricted in a USB function due to an HDMI setting. My only guess in that aspect is that the camera may think something is connected to the HDMI port as well as the USB and that can cause issues. I would reset the camera's settings in the Setup menu and then set the USB video streaming function back to [Video Calls/Streaming] before reconnecting the computer to USB.

One great thing about this new USB Video Class function that allows direct streaming is that the camera should be read the same way as any other USB webcam, so I might also suggest trying to access the webcam feed outside of the EOS Webcam Utility since the program does not yet list the EOS R5 Mark II as a compatible device with the program.

What kind of USB cable do you have and also what connector on the computer. I would suggest that you use a good quality USB-C to USB-C cable connected directly to a USB-C port on the computer. I don't have the EOS R5 Mark II but the implementation of the webcam capability is the same as the EOS R6 Mark II which I do have. 

I select the USB connection app to Video calls/streaming and connect the cables up. In my software on the computer I select Canon Digital Camera for the video and also for the audio to use the camera audio. This then will work fine in Zoom / Skype / Teams. I have not tried OBS, but it's much the same. On my camera the LCD shows STBY at the top left until you join a meeting when it changes to LIVE. 

One of the problems with USB-C cables is there are many standards for the wire between the connectors. I'm using cables rated as 20Gbps and 240W (Thunderbolt3) and they work. I have heard of problems from others when trying to use phone charging type cables.

I'm using the one that came with camera.   Canon Connect for remote shooting works.   I think it's more a defect in the Webcam Utility and its associated drivers WHICH HAS NO FREAKING DOCUMENTATION.   Even on the RP which I can use semi-reliably, it's really catch as catch can.

I now have been able to get the R5ii to work tethered at least some of the time.   (No thanks to the absolutely incomprehensible and incomplete documentation).   Still don't understand what the point of pairing the wireless side to Webcam Utility (which appears to succeed) as it will never stream from there.
