R5 file numbering question

Magicspell

I've noticed a peculiarity in the file numbering on my R5.  It's not consistent, but I've ended up getting file numbers like the following:

_DS55349_1.CR3, _DS55349_2.CR3, _DS55349.CR3, _DS55350_1.CR3, _DS55350_2.CR3, _DS55350.CR3 (and the associated .JPG files)

Then the next time I use the R5 I get file numbers as I would expect:

_DS55736.CR3, _DS55737.CR3, ...

I know what causes the "_" at the beginning of the file name (using the aRGB color space), but what is causing the "_1" and "_2" after the xxxx file number?

Is this showing up in the download folder (not on the camera card)?

That generally occurs when you are repetitively downloading files to the same folder. The computer file system isn't smart enough to know the images are the same. All it sees is a second, third etc. file with the same name and modifies the file name to avoid overwriting the files.

Thank you.  It would appear this is a EOS Utility "feature".  I am using EOS Utility 3 to download images from the CFExpress card in my R5 to my laptop (as in interim storage location until I return home).  I'm guessing that each image has only one raw and one jpg on the card, but for some reason EOS Utility is transferring each image multiple times to my laptop's internal SSD.  This is further confirmed when I look at the time stamp in Finder on my MacBook as all of the resulting images for each image on the card have the same creation time stamp in Finder, but the time stamp showing when they were added to the folder are spread apart (the file without a suffix has a time stamp of 2:49pm, the file with a _1 suffix has a time stamp of 3:03pm, and the file with a _2 suffix has a time stamp of 3:25pm).

I'm not intentionally trying to download images multiple times, but maybe my use of EOS Utility is resulting in multiple downloads for each image by accident.  Regardless, I think I can safely assume that each of the matching files are the same image from the CFExpress card and the duplicates can be safely deleted.

Many thanks for the suggestion!

Are you connecting camera multiple times or did this occur with a single connection of EOSU?

A single connection of EOS U.  Although, come to think of it at home I usually just import all new images at once.  This time, I selected images by day and did the import.  Two of the days resulted in multiple files being written to my MacBook.  The third day's images imported with only single raw and single jpg files.

I suppose even though I told EOS U to select only certain images on the card for each of the import actions, it actually re-imported the same images on the second and third import actions.  This resulted in three files per image for day 1, two files per image for day 2, and one file per image for day 3.

This is starting to make much more sense to me and ultimately it looks like operator error for using EOS U...
