EOS Utility: RAW images are Renaming When downloading to PC

This problem has just started in the last two weekends that I went out shooting.  I shoot with a Canon R6.

I was shooting wildlife so I was using continuous shooting and holding the shutter in short bursts.  I did not look at the image numbers while the images were on the card in the camera.  I use EOS Utility to download the images from the camera to my PC (I do not take the SD card out to download).  The images get downloaded to my Photos folder into a sub-folder named with the date of the shoot.  So if I have 2 days of shooting on my card, I will get 2 sub-folders, one for each date of the two day shooting.

When I opened the directory for 01_25_2025, the image numbers were all messed up.  Here is an example - _MG_0001.cr3, _MG_0001_1.cr3, _MG_0001_2.cr3 etc.  These are not duplicates.  The 0001 is the start of one group of continuous shooting of an eagle.  The 0001_1 is the start of another group of continuous shooting of the same eagle at a different zoom, etc.

In the screenshot below, you will see the first 8 images are different zooms and bird positioning and the 8th is of an owl.  These are all in the _2 set of images, because I did shoot continuous shooting.  I have always done this for the last 2 years that I have owned this camera and had no issues with the numbering of my images.  They have always been numbered properly.

The _MG_0001 and _MG_0002 and _MG_0003 etc are the same group of images that I took continuosly.  The problem is the _MG_0001_1 should be the number after the first _0001 group ends.  So if the last image for the first group is _MG_0010 the next number for the the second groups first image should be _MG_0011.  It is not.  Now I have to make a batch file to rename these images and it is time consuming and easy to mess up the proper order (I already messed it up half way through making the file).

Does anyone know why this is happening all of a sudden?

The only thing I have done differently than I normally do is formatting my 2 SD cards.  I have always just erased the images from the cards.  Then 3 or 4 weeks ago, the camera took a long time to start whenever I first turned it on.  Then my friend said that it is probably because I need to format the cards to truly get rid of the image history.  After I formatted the cards, the camera started fine.

Oh yeah, the settings under the wrench are:

Record func+card/folder sel = Separate - Disable
Image Rec Options - Auto switch card
Video Rec Options - Auto Switch card
                                                      Image Record/play - 1
                                                      Video Record/play - 2
                                                      Folder - 100Canon
File Numbering = Continuous (should it be Auto reset?)
File Name = IMG_
Date and time = Jan 28, 2025 6:39:28
Firmware = 1.8.3

I did notice that my time was set wrong even though I know I made sure it was correct after the time change in the Fall.

Thanks for any help.

sRGB is default should be set as such in your menu. That setting would be found in the menu,  the red camera icon and on tab 3.

If it is set to Adobe RGB color space, the camera will automatically rename your files to add the underscore _ and drop the "I".

sRGB is default, so the reset it back to that color space and restart you camera and everything should be back to normal.

Manual set to page/menu to reset color space

Thanks for your reply.

I am not talking about the I being replaced with the underscore.  I am talking about the numbering of the images as shown in the screenshot.  They are not consecutive numbering anymore.

Have you attempted a factory reset to see if that resolves the issue?

I was hoping there was another solution other than factory reset.  I did not really want to go through all the settings again and change them to my liking.  I was thinking of re-install the firmware and see if that got messed up somehow.

I've never tried it but it may be worth a shot. I don't mean to be disrespectful but I have to ask, did you drop the battery to see if that would help?

Drop the battery?  No, I did not drop the battery.  I am not sure about dropping a battery on purpose.

Sorry, take it out of the camera. Very poor wording on my part.
