Program 2 Buttons to Exposure Compensation - 7D Mark II

7D Mark II. I would like to program Exposure Control to 2 bittons; One +1 stop and a second -1 stop. Hocever, it appears you can only have 1 value. So the last one Ienter is used for both buttons.

I may be able to do it another way. Is it possible to assign C1 and C2 to buttons. I don't want to have to look at the top of the camera to invoke C1, C2 or C3. That way I could set C1 to + 1 stop and C2 to - 1 stop and assign C1 and C2 to two different buttons.

I assume you are making use of the recall/register shooting function with the AF-ON and * buttons. I can replicate the same issue, any buttons which are assigned the recall/register shooting func get the same settings.

There is no way for a custom button to switch the mode on the EOS 7D Mark II as the mode is defined by the position of the mode dial.

It is possible to register different settings for the compensation amount using the C1/C2 modes. However you can display the current mode in the viewfinder so that with a little muscle memory you might be able to reach for the mode dial and turn it between C1/C2.

If you go to the SET UP3 menu, select Viewfinder display then Show/hide in viewfinder the options that can be shown include the current mode. So then you would see the mode in the lower left corner of the image area.

I think the simplest solution is to reprogram the [SET] button for Exposure Compensation.  The button must be held fully pressed while you turn the Main Wheel.

This idea is much better than using the Menu buttin to get to Exposure Compensation and then setting a value. However, I would have to remember to move the setting back to neutral.

90% of the I photograph with my 7D Mark II is action so it's something I'll try to remember to reset.

The only way I would use C1, C2 and/or C3 is if I could store a different value for exposure compensation in C1 & C2 and then recall them using two different back buttons. Turning the Mode dial is not convenient. Over 90% of my shooting is action and getting that to work is not practical.

Your first idea would be exactly what I would like to do except it doesn't work. I cannot register different values for the same parameter to work on two different buttons.

Let me explain.

I tried to set AF-ON to plus 1 stop Exp Comp and * to minus 1 stop Exp Comp. However, it only let's me assign one value. So if I assign +1 to AF-ON and then -1 to * they both then have the last value assigned which is -1 stop.

Unless there is something I don't see this doesn't work.

If you use a Custom Shooting mode with automatic updates disabled, then the exposure settings will reset to the default settings for the mode that you have defined.

How long have you used or owned a 7D2.  The 7D2 is incapable of doing any what you are describing.    If you wish to make a feature suggestion, then you can. The 7D2 must be at least a decade old by now.  Firmware updates to add features are simply not on the radar, most especially features that the camera is electro-mechanically incapable of performing.

Why don't you go to my Facebook page and take a quick look at what I've produced with that  camera? I don't shoot easy stuff. Almost all action with changing levels of light.

I shot with the 7d and 7dII for well over a decade.  I shoot wildlife which can be very similar to action shots - wild animals don't sit nicely for a shot, especially on the wing or in the hunt, so I hope I have some understanding of the issues.

I know of no way to assign EV compensation to custom buttons.  I would suggest that, even if one could assign an EV value to a C1-C3 button, the need to turn a dial on the top of the body is still there.   Even if one could assign the function to different buttons (which I believe is impossible) one would still have to remember to reset this after use, so the issue you express would still exist.

With all due respect to your experience and skill, the use of an EV dial, and having to remember to reset are simply things one learns to deal with.  Have you considered  the alternative to shoot in M mode and just use the front and rear dials respectively, so no need for use of the EV dial?
