M50 - Lacking Sharpness

Basia613

I have the M50 and my footage is majorly lacking sharpness.  The footage isn't crisp and looks sort of dull and flat. I'm shooting on 59FPS at 1/125. I have a Sigma 16mm F1.4 lens.

I've read up about this on various website and some people do have my issue while some don't. Maybe there's something wrong with my specific camera? Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a solution?

Basia613,

Just for the heck of it, try shooting a few things at 30fps and a shutter speed of 1/60th.

Do you get the same results?

There may be separate reasons for the sharpness and the dull / flat look of the footage.

  • Lack of sharpness could be down to poor focus, and to a lesser extent the sharpening applied with the Picture Style settings
  • Dull / flat look this is most likely the result of the Picture Style used. There are lots of online suggestions to use a super flat configured Neutral Picture Style, with zero sharpening, minimal contrast and minimal saturation. This does give very flat dull footage, but it's better to start from that point if you want to do colour grading on the movie. For movies where significant colour grading is not done, then maybe using the Standard picture style is better.

According to Sigma's own website, the lens is listed on it's compatibility table, but they do not guarantee it for more than basic functionality - such functionality will not be likely to include video at specific settings.  You might want to pursue this with Sigma support, as Canon do not support 3rd party lenses.
