EOS R5 focus spot keeps moving to the top of the screen

I am using in one-point focus and I am constantly having to put the “Set” button to get the focus point back in the center of the screen.  I don’t know what settings to tell you I have to help you help me….

I am using what is called “two button back focus” where one button, the AF button is for eye auto focus and the star (*) button is for just “auto focus” — my shutter button is set to just start metering but not focus.

Let me know if you need more information.

Thank you in advance

I suggest you use the Multi function lock setting on the SET UP menu. This can be configured to lock a range of controls including the touchscreen. Locking the screen stops you moving the AF point inadvertently while shooting. You activate the lock by pressing the LOCK button on the top of the camera.

Canon has been a little clever, even with the touchscreen locked in this way, if you press the Q or MENU buttons then the touchscreen is again active so you can make changes to settings and menus, while the lock is active.

Hi pedz,

One thing to check with an issue like this is to try disabling the Touch & Drag AF setting on the camera. If the camera is detecting something touching the top of the LCD screen with that setting enabled it would cause the AF point to keep jumping up to the top of the frame.

You can check that setting by putting the camera into either P, Tv, Av, or M and press the Menu button. Go to the first page under the AF tab, select Touch & Drag AF Settings, and try disabling it. Once you've done that back out of the menu and check to see if the same thing is happening.

If the issue continues is it happening both when you use the eye tracking focus and when you use the general auto focus, or is it only happening when you use one of them?

I can verify that this DOES NOT work. I set the touch and drag focus to "off", left the menu and touched the screen. The point moves.

AV mode.

Hi.  If the view finder is off, then the touch screen is active.  But if you put your face up to the view finder, the touch screen turns off.  So this solution works as well.

Please try it and confirm.

I don’t shoot everyday and it may be a while before I get out again but your suggestion sounds like it might be the problem.  I will try it out and get back to you.

Thank you

This does work.  The "Disable" of the Touch and Drag AF does not work as pointed out by jblooo.

Note that to get this suggestion solution to work, the user needs to set it up in the Setup 4 Menu so that the touch screen is checked.  The other options may be checked or not depending upon what the user wants.  I unchecked all of the other options.

THEN (I forgot this part the first time), the Lock button needs to be pressed (yeah... I know... Dahhh! 🤣).  A polite warning flashes that the controls are locked.  Press Lock again and a polite warning flashes that the controls are now unlocked.

I wonder now what the "Disable" of the Touch & Drag AF setting does... but that's another topic I suppose.

Touch and drag is the function where you can move the AF point while looking through the viewfinder using your thumb on the LCD. However since the R5 has a joystick to move the AF point it’s less needed to use touch and drag. Also touch and drag is less useful if you wear gloves for example.
