EOS R5 MK 2 - EVF and Screen random White-Out at switch on

Hobby-Snapper

My R5 MK 2 works fine with my EF 16-35 f4 L and my EF 24-70 f2.8 L lenses, it also seems to work fine with my RF 28mm f2.8 STM lens.

A couple of months ago, I purchased a RF 24mm f1.8 STM and found that, randomly, at camera turn on, both the EVF and the screen were saturated white as if the sensor was massively over exposed. I returned the lens believing it to be faulty.

Last week, I purchased a RF 15-35mm f2.8 L and was very disappointed to find that it to is randomly white screening at power on

I have found that if I am able to take a photo while in the “white-out” state, the images are pure white – totally over exposed.

When the white-out condition occurs, it clears itself after around 15-30 seconds or so.

I have tried everything I can think of to identify the cause and have factory-reset the camera several times.

I am not using any “non-default” camera settings for exposer etc.

I tend to have the camera connected to my phone Camera-Connect app via Bluetooth so that I can geo-tag my photos, I am not completely certain but I think the problem is less prevalent when NOT connected to the phone??

Has anybody else experienced this problem?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated

UPDATE: When out and about with my camera, I always have Canon Connect on my Android phone linked to the camera via Bluetooth as I like to geotag every photo that I take.

For the past week, I have stopped using Camera Connect and my white-screen problem has not re-occurred.

I am beginning to think that when I turn on the camera, while it is connecting to the phone over Bluetooth and waiting for the GPS data, it somehow gets screwed up ??

I hope at some point, Canon also notices the problem and produces a fix ….

Further update: I have now convinced myself that it is definately the camera connection to my phone's camera connect app that is causing the problem as the problem only happens when connected to my phone and never happens when not connected, a shame as I like to geotag my photos but it's just not worth the hassle when it randomly causes the camera to White Screen !!

Greetings Hobby-Snapper,

It does sound like an odd issue that your EOS R5 Mark II camera is having, as if there is an overexposure issue even though you have confirmed the settings to check and see if this was the case. Check and clean the contacts on the lenses as well as checking to see if there is any debris on the pins on the camera body where the lens connects to the camera. When the camera displays a white image, is this while outdoors? For example, we can take the camera into a dark room, like a closet or bathroom with the lights turned off to see if this issue occurs when indoors.

Please check to see if the camera and lenses are running on the latest firmware version. Hello Natalya,

Thank you for your reply.

I have checked the contacts on the camera and the lenses and as I expected, they are immaculate, I am very careful with lenses and camera when swapping lenses.

I have also checked the firmware in camera and lens and they are the latest versions.

I have seen the problem both in bright outside conditions and also inside in very dim conditions, there does not seem to be any correlation.

I also had the problem yesterday with my EF 16-35mm f4 lens, the first time I have seen it on a non RF lens so the problem must definately lie with the R5 MK2 😞

Unfortunately, I can turn the camera on 50 times without the problem occuring, then out of the blue, it will randomly happen which makes it very difficult to try and diagnose.

I have stopped connecting to the Camer Connect App for GPS to see if it makes any difference.

Any outher ideas?

Many thanks for your support
