Hello,
PLEASE Canon, implement a naming convention that helps us separate out bracketed shots from our regular shots. I use Focus Bracketing, and often times take a few deeper depth of field (narrower aperture) pics before or after with similar framing. It frustrates me SO much that Canon doesn't simply add something like _FB for focus bracket shots (or _EB for Exposure Bracket shooting) along with the normal file name random string sequence at the front for nice file name sorting order and then an _XX numeric so we know the bracket shot (like 8A07139_FB_01, etc.). Yes, I *know* I can make a directory or change the filename but I do NOT want to have to do this every time I switch to a bracketing shot. Sometimes, since I'm taking bug macro shots, I don't have time to do all of that. This should be quite simple for Canon to implement and it is ridiculous that they don't. Bonus points if they let us configure what the file name looks like in AEB and FB as well in the FW.

Try taking a “blank” frame between brackets. Cover the lens and take a photo. Use a lens cap, a ball cap, anything you have handy to cover the lens.
[EDIT]
The file naming convention used in cameras is standardized among the major manufacturers and is not going to change anytime soon.

Thanks. This is a good "work around" for a sh!tty situation. I'm not so sure the file naming convention is standardized, as I *can* set my own file name mask, which I would love it if I could just set a different one from normal for Focus Bracketing and AE bracketing [AEB] (that and have it append the local seq no for each bracketing shot). This is so very frustratingly "complex" for no good reason. Still, yes, IF I can remember to do it, I turn off FB and take a dark/blank shot before after. I remember to do that like 30% of the time. 😞

The default naming scheme is an industry standard. For example, when you switch to the Adobe color space, the first character of the filename will always be an underscore. There’s nothing you can do to change it.

" as I *can* set my own file name mask"
Can you explain what you mean by that?

Inside the first page of Tools menu, you can click on "Filename" and change the "8D4A" to any custom leading mask for your filenames. Like "JMG_" or "IMG_" or whatever...anyway, I guess I wasn't saying "there is no file naming standard", I was saying "you don't appear to be restricted to having to USE it", so I would like them to all me to specify a Focus Bracket mask and AEB mask that it switches to (and then adds in a unique sequence number and then _XX for the bracket sequence).

Oh. But I believe you are still limited to 8 characters - four for the prefix and four for the file number. And if you switch to Adobe RGB you will still get the underscore as the first character. At least that is how my 1DX Mark III works.

Yes, I believe you're correct, reading this more (and looking at the link I provided above). I would like (at a bare minimum) for them to switch to FB0123_1 for focus bracket (where 0123 is just unique numbering sequence and last char is 0-9a-z for unique bracket sequence which gives us at least 36 seq...not sure there is room for more if shooting more than 36 focus brackets...guess could use two chars and subtract from main sequence) and something like EB9876_0 for AEB (where last single character is the unique exposure sub bracket)
