Considering upgrading from an EOS 750D to a 250

Hi,

So I'm an automotive photographer, I've been using an EOS 750D for a good 4/5 years now and whilst I'm well aware it's very much a limited camera, it's done the job admirably. However, I am starting to get more into video work, and this is where the 750D has fallen flat. It has zero stabilisation, and even with a gimbal I find myself having to stabilise a lot in post, which doesn't always work.

As the nature of these videos are almost always for social media, I'm not too bothered by the cropped nature of the 250D's "4K" videos - my primary interest is the inbuilt electronic stabilisation. I do not have the funds for a full-frame camera or one with full IBIS. My budget is extremely limited and I will have to sell my 750D to fund it.

So really what I want to know is, what's the stabilisation like? Does anyone have any experience with it? I can't really find any decent examples on YouTube. None of my lenses are stabilised either. Equally, if anyone knows of any other decent EF-S cameras around the same price point (£350-450) that may be better suited for my needs, please do let me know 🙌

Just to clarify - I am still going to be using it primarily for photography, but I want to offer my clients some Instagram reel style content on a more regular basis. I have been doing these fine for now, but a lot of clips can become unusable because of the lack of stabilisation.

Canon has been withdrawing from DSLR camera and lens market for years now. In favor of the new EOS R series mirrorless camera lineup. Your choices when it comes to EF and EF-S lenses are getting smaller and smaller by the day. The used market for EF & EF-S lenses will continue to be around. As far as lenses what do you have. Please provide the full name of the lenses you currently own. Mirrorless is a huge step above DSLRs. The EOS 750D/ EOS Rebel T6i has a better viewfinder AF system than the EOS 250D/ EOS Rebel SL3. The 9 point AF was first released in 2004. With the EOS 20D and would continue to be used today in more entry level DSLR cameras.

Given that your priority is photography then the better solution would be the EOS 850D, it has all that the EOS 250D offers for video, perhaps even more and significant updates to the AF over your EOS 750D for still photography. I think you will find the 45-point AF a real step up over your camera's 19-point system, and the 7fps is helpful for action photos.

I have used the EOS 850D and EOS 250D a little for video in the past and the digital stabilisation is quite effective. Please note that when you select Enhanced stabilisation the image will be cropped a little more than with standard stabilisation. For wide-angle use this might be more of a problem.

I did look at the UK MPB website where they do have some used EOS 850D bodies priced close to your indicated budget.

I have the T8i (850D) and I like it very much.
