New beginner "suggestions for first camera and lens"

I am looking for suggestions for my first camera and lens. I have a budget of about $1000-$1200 dollars to get started with a camera and lens. My only experience has been shooting underwater shots with an old Olympus 350 camera and underwater point and shoots.
