Hi, I am traveling to Iceland and Norway to view the Northern Lights. I am a beginner and would like as many helpful hints with how to take pictures of the Northern Lights and the best lens to use.  Thank you.  Vicky

Greetings,

It would be helpful if you could provide a budget and list any lenses you currently own now.

A fast lens will be helpful shooting the Northern Lights.

I'm sure you'll receive different recommendations.  I might recommend the following two lenses.

Sigma RF 17-40 f1.8 Art.  This is a constant aperture lens licensed by Canon for APS-C.  It's around $919.

Sigma 18-50 f2.8 is also very popular.

Sigma has wonderful primes for RF APS-C.  I would recommend a zoom (for versatility) unless you have a specific need for a particular focal length.

You'll want to practice a bit before your trip. If you already have the RF-S 18-45 it might not be fast enough for Northern Lights, and could require high ISO and slow shutter speeds.  In this scenario, a tripod would be recommended.

  • Thank you for taking the time to respond. I will research the lenses and start practicing with my current RFS 18-45. Have a great day. V.
