PIXMA TS3720 not responding error while printing envelopes

Legs1616

I have a Pixma TS3720 and I am using a usb connection to my desktop which is running Win10. I bought this printer last October because its a rear feed printer and I often have to address 50-75 envelopes at a time. I used this printer last night and addressed maybe a dozen envelopes and all was fine. When I tried to finish the job today, I ran half a dozen envelopes thru the printer with no problem and then suddenly, for no reason that I could see, the printer stopped feeding the envelopes into the printer and I got a message that said "printer not responding". I called and spoke with a tech for a long tome....he walked me thru some steps and wanted me to print out a chart using letter size paper. I did and the chart printed just fine...here's the weird part

When I tried again to run an envelope through, nothing happened and then the tech told me that even 'tho I bought this printer 4 months ago and have used it to print several hundred envelopes, this particular printer was not designed to print envelopes. He said that even 'tho a printer is not designed to print envelopes, it's possible for it to do it for some time and then it runs into a problem and then will never print them again. What kind of strange magic is that?

I have never heard of anything like that in my long life!! I told him I have to have a printer that is designed to print envelopes and he paused and looked thru something and then said that the MG3620 is designed to print envelopes. I asked him how much it was and he said I'd have to call the sales dept.

But when I took my envelopes off the printer, I noticed that the feed tray shows a image of an envelope at the far right of the tray...I didn't see that when I was talking to the tech, but why on earth would a printer's paper tray have the image of an envelope right on the tray itself ???? If I could figure out how to upload a photo, I would do so.

Is this true at all???? I did not dream a printer's specs would say whether it not it can print envelopes...and if you can print 4x6 photos on a printer., then why wouldn't you be able to print a 4.75 x 5.50 size envelope? The paper tray on this printer lets you choose any size you want and long as you feed the envelopes into the tray in a certain direction.

I'll try again later and see what happens, but want to know if he was right about certain printers not being 'designed' to print envelopes (I have had many printers, all major brands over the last 35 (?) years and they all printed envelopes............) I am really stunned at this info I received from a Canon tech.

From the Pixma TS3700 series printer manual:

https://ij.manual.canon/ij/webmanual/Manual/All/TS3700%20series/EN/UG/ug-191.html

I owned a Canon Pixma TS3722. It  did or does not support 8x10 borderless prints on photo paper or envelope printing. I faked it by setting my paper to plain and printing a photo on glossy paper. It worked for awhile, then it would not respond or the printer software would disable the borderless option on its own. I gave it away and bought and MG3620 which prints 8.5x11 borderless photos on glossy paper just fine and it has an envelope setting.

Unsupported Media Types

Do not use the following types of paper. Using such paper will cause not only unsatisfactory results, but also the printer to jam or malfunction.

  • Folded, curled, or wrinkled paper

  • Damp paper

  • Paper with unstraightened edges like manualy cut paper

  • Picture postcards

  • Postcards affixed with photos or stickers

  • Envelopes

  • Any type of paper with holes

  • Paper that is not rectangular

  • Paper bound with staples or glue

  • Paper with an adhesive surface on the back such as label seal

  • Paper decorated with glitter, etc.

In answer to your envelope icon, I suspect they use a lot of the same trays for different printers, even if they don't have the same features, like printing envelopes maybe?

Well, I guess the tech was right and I wasn't. Thanks very much for your time and expertise!

I do wonder if this is something Canon says just to cover its donkey and stop millions of complaints like mine.

I do find it misleading that they have that perfect little envelope icon at the far right that shows you which side of the envelope should be up and in which direction it should be loaded.

All is not lost though....I have gained some knowledge and after cooling off yesterday, I came back and fired it up and finished printing all my envelopes.

It is my desire to gave bonebof thosr

If I could figure out how to edit my comment above, I would. I have another question, but I will start a new conversation. Thanks again!!!

That is entirely possible, but if I was in a store and saw this printer out on display with that icon, I would assume it would print envelopes.

After trial and failure, I learned the best envelopes to use in a printer are the lightweight envelopes that lie perfectly flat and have no bulk.....probably made from no heavier than 60# paper.

One more thing....I noticed one of your posts was edited......would you mind telling me how to go about that? Thanks again~~~
