After clearing a paper jam in the rear of the device, I now have a continuously flashing caution light and a "Support 77 Code 7700" message that says "Turn off the device and contact the service center"

On the Canon PIXMA TR7020a, support code 7700 indicates an internal electronic communication failure, usually caused by damaged contacts on the printhead, faulty ink cartridges, or a serious internal hardware malfunction. According to the Canon Official Knowledge Base, it specifically targets issues where the printer fail to recognize the cartridges properly.

Check to make sure the cartridge carrier has no small pieces of debris or paper restricting its movements or interfering with the print head function. If problem persists then continue:

Follow these steps in order to troubleshoot and attempt to clear the error.

1. Perform a Hard Power Reset

Sometimes, clearing the printer's temporary memory is enough to resolve a communication glitch. [1]

  • Turn off the printer using the power button.

  • Unplug the power cord completely from both the wall outlet and the printer.

  • Press and hold the power button for about 10 to 15 seconds to drain any remaining electricity from the internal components.

  • Leave the printer unplugged for at least 10 minutes.

  • Plug the power cord back directly into the wall outlet (avoid using a surge protector for this test) and turn it back on.

2. Inspect and Reseat the Ink Cartridges

If the power cycle doesn't clear the error code, the printer may not be communicating with the electrical contacts on the ink cartridges.

  • Open the scanner bed cover to expose the cartridge carriage. (Note: If the error locks the carriage in place, unplug the printer, wait a moment, and gently slide the carriage manually to the center access area).

  • Take out both the black and color cartridges.

  • Inspect the gold metallic contact points on the front of the cartridges and the pins inside the carriage holder for any spilled ink or debris.

  • Use a dry, lint-free cloth (like a microfiber cloth) to gently wipe the contacts clean. Do not use paper towels or tissue, as they leave fibers behind.

  • Push the cartridges firmly back into their respective slots until they securely click into place, then close the printer cover
