MG5650 replacement of color cartridge with a black one

actually i have already set just black printing in my PC from the beginning but this time the printer didn t allow me to print while the color cartridge is empty. it happened the first time since i have the printer. that s why i am wondering if all color cartridges may i replace with black ones??
