I've downloaded the firmware but it only shows on my Mac as a .dmg file. When I click on it, it does not open further. Is this whole .dmg file what I drag to my card?

But check the exact size in Finder. Does it show 38,020,608 bytes? Note though that this check wouldn't be proving that the contents are identical (that's why things like MD5 are very useful as a check).
