There’s no question that consumers have to navigate a widespread counterfeit battery problem. So, why doesn’t Canon allow consumers to register batteries that have serial numbers, and throw up a red flag when the serial is bogus? This won’t solve the problem entirely, but it will go a long way. There could also be a PIN from each battery to enter. This at great benefit to consumers and very low cost to Canon, probably offset by selling more authentic batteries.

Greetings,
This is a big problem for the storage industry (has been for some time now), Although counterfeit merchandise can appear anywhere, we recommend that you purchase from a Canon authorized dealer. While this doesn't guarantee authenticity, it greatly improves your odds of getting authentic gear. Canon embeds a battery's serial number on the chip inside the battery. If they printed it on the battery itself, it could be more easily duplicated. Most body's allow you to register up to 4 batteries to a body. Battery decoding technology has also become very good making it even easier for these types of products to be faked. "... we recommend that you purchase from a Canon authorized dealer."
That is the key. Always buy from a known good retail outlet.
" While this doesn't guarantee authenticity, ..."
I would suggest it does because these retail outlets only get their inventory form the bonafide source. If you go on sources like Amazon Marketplace or eBay or Facebook, etc., who knows what you will get. They might be legit but that might not. And if they are cheaper than the good guys selling price you can bet it is counterfeit. I hate to mention the best store(s) because there are many but where you are going to run into trouble is the online sellers and the aforementioned sources.
