The same card I have been using for about a year suddenly does not work. It is not locked and i have cleaned it, however every time I plug it in it comes with the error message "Check the memory card" and does not connect. I tried formatting the card on my computer and even using another, unformatted but empty card to no avail. Does anyone know what is wrong with it/how to fix? Thanks!

Greetings,
If the same behavior occurs with another card, its the camera, not the memory cards.
Recommend you contact Canon.

Memory cards can/do fail. Can you format the card on a computer? Have you tried another memory card in your camera?
