Two other things to check:- You need to be in a camera mode other than Automatic, such as Manual or Aperture Priority. - Make sure in the green custom menu page 2 that the Focus Ring is set to "Focus" not "Control"
I have the RF 70-200 2.8 Z lens and it has no problem landing on 85mm and other specific focal lengths. If this is the non-Z lens, perhaps the stiffer zoom ring makes it harder to hit specific values.
