Solution found - thanks to Ken Rockwell. The level function disappears if face/eye focus recognition is turned on. Both can't be activated at the same time.
If other lenses work with the body your 75-300 may have slight mount damage that isn't easy to spot. Mount tolerances are so tight that a very small tweak will make a poor fit.
I finally got it solved - this lens has a switch on the barrel I didn't notice. The front ring functions either as a control ring or focus control depending on switch position. It works fine as a control ring now but doesn't click like other R lenses...
