Well, in New Zealand, native wildlife means birds and a couple of small bats. So, while I prefer to photograph macro mammals, I guess I should share a few images of the locals...
Like many species, the Takahe is a threatened species with only about 500 individuals left.  To learn about this check out this link: Takahē: NZ native land birds (

I am a volunteer at the island of Tiritiri Matangi where these birds are reared in protected conditions and, when ready, are shipped down to their natural habitat in NZ's South Island.  Tiritiri is a pioneering open scientific sanctuary that allows visitors under controlled conditions and is heavily supported by a volunteer group: Our Supporters/Our Vision – Tiritiri Matangi.
