The Golden Tanager, scientifically known as Tangara arthus, is one of the most vibrant birds found in the Andean cloud forests. During my visit to La Minga Ecolodge near Cali, Colombia, I had the privilege of photographing this stunning species in its natural habitat. This location, renowned for its rich biodiversity and commitment to conservation, provided an ideal setting to capture the beauty of the tanager.
In this particular image, the Golden Tanager is perched gracefully on a weathered branch, surrounded by a softly blurred green background. Its radiant golden-yellow plumage, contrasted by bold black markings, is accentuated by the soft, diffused light filtering through the dense canopy of the cloud forest. Every intricate detail of the bird’s feathers, from their texture to the vivid interplay of colors, was brought to life by this natural lighting.
To capture this shot, I used the Canon R5 paired with the RF 100-500mm lens. I selected a shutter speed of 1/350 to freeze the subtle movements of the bird, an essential choice for capturing such an active subject. The ISO was set to 800 to handle the low-light conditions of the forest, maintaining vibrant colors while minimizing noise. The lens, set at its maximum focal length of 500mm, provided the reach necessary to frame the bird without disturbing its natural behavior.
This photograph represents more than just the beauty of the Golden Tanager. It highlights the interconnectedness of the species within its environment and the importance of preserving fragile ecosystems like the Andean cloud forests. The collaboration with Asherita Viajera, a skilled birding guide, was instrumental in locating and observing this species, making the entire experience even more meaningful.
Through photography, I aim to share the wonders of the natural world and inspire others to appreciate and protect it. The Golden Tanager is a reminder of the breathtaking diversity our planet holds and the responsibility we all share in ensuring its survival.
