The Gilded Barbet (Capito auratus) is a striking species found throughout the tropical forests of South America. Its vibrant yellow and black plumage, contrasted by a deep red eye, makes it an unmistakable presence among the dense greenery of its habitat. This image was taken in Restrepo, Meta, Colombia, an urban area where biodiversity continues to thrive despite human development. Located just minutes from Villavicencio and with easy access from Bogotá, Restrepo serves as an important reminder of how nature and urban life can coexist.
I was invited by PAU Colombia to explore this region and document its rich birdlife. While walking through the area, I came across this Gilded Barbet perched on a fruiting branch. Watching it feed was a fascinating moment, as barbets play a crucial role in seed dispersal, helping regenerate forests with every meal. Despite being a common species, its ecological role is vital to maintaining the balance of its ecosystem.
To capture this image, I used a Canon R5 with an RF 800mm f/11 lens and a 1.4x extender. The shot was taken at 1/125 second, f/16, and ISO 1600. The f/16 aperture was necessary to maintain sharpness across the frame while compensating for the extender’s effect on light transmission. Shooting at 1/125 second was possible due to the camera’s stabilization, allowing for crisp detail despite the long focal length. The ISO 1600 setting provided enough sensitivity to properly expose the image in the low light of the forest canopy while maintaining a balance between detail and noise.
Wildlife photography requires patience and technical precision, particularly when photographing birds in dynamic environments. This image highlights the importance of understanding camera settings and environmental conditions to achieve a well-exposed, sharp composition. More importantly, it serves as a visual reminder of the delicate balance in which these species exist and the significance of conservation efforts that protect their habitats.
