This image of the Straight-Billed Woodcreeper (Dendroplex picus) was taken during an urban photo walk in Restrepo, Meta, Colombia. The location is just a few blocks away from the bustling central park, making it an ideal spot to capture the intersection of nature and urban life. This small town, surrounded by a mix of forested areas and human activity, is home to a wide variety of bird species, including the elusive Straight-Billed Woodcreeper.
I used my Canon R5 paired with an 800mm f/11 lens and a 1.4x extender to get a clear, detailed shot from a distance. The setup provided the necessary reach to capture this bird without disturbing its natural behavior. The settings of 1/180 second and ISO 1600 were essential to achieve a well-exposed image. The shutter speed was selected automatically by the camera’s Program mode, while I manually set the ISO to ensure I had enough sensitivity to capture fine details in the bird’s feathers. The light, filtered through the canopy, created a serene and natural atmosphere, allowing me to preserve the bird’s textures and form.
The image required careful attention to lighting and framing to showcase the Straight-Billed Woodcreeper’s distinctive features—its long, straight bill and its elegant plumage blending with the bark of the tree. Restrepo’s unique balance of urban and natural spaces provided the perfect backdrop for capturing this moment.
